24th February 2024, Kololo Ceremonial Grounds – Day 1 of the highly anticipated Harvest Money Expo kicked off yesterday, drawing farmers, enthusiasts, and learners alike to explore the latest innovations and practices in agriculture. Among the bustling stalls and informative sessions, MST Junior School stood out as a guiding light of practical learning and ingenuity.
With a diverse array of presentations and demonstrations, the learners of MST Junior School showcased their expertise in various facets of farming, particularly focusing on pig farming, waste management, and snail farming. Under the guidance of their teachers, these young individuals exhibited best practices and innovative techniques that captured the attention of attendees.
In the realm of pig farming, the learners delved into crucial aspects such as housing, feeding, vaccination, and rate management. Additionally, they highlighted the importance of sow and bore management, emphasizing optimal conditions for breeding and growth.
Waste management emerged as another key area of focus, with learners presenting inventive solutions such as utilizing black soldier fly larvae, earthworms, and vermicomposting to convert waste into valuable resources like frass and vermicompost. Their innovative approaches underscored the importance of sustainability in modern agriculture.
Notably, the learners also showcased their expertise in snail farming, demonstrating techniques for slime extraction and even the production of body cream—a value-added product derived from snail mucin. This unique presentation highlighted the potential for diversification and value addition within the agricultural sector.
Among the attendees, one proud parent, Mrs. Kayongo Maria, expressed her appreciation for the practical approach to learning exhibited by MST Junior School. She commended the school for providing opportunities for young individuals like her daughter, Shivan Nakayiwa, to engage in hands-on activities and develop practical skills in waste management.
As the Harvest Money Expo continues, MST Junior School remains committed to nurturing the next generation of farmers and agricultural innovators. With their emphasis on practical learning and sustainable practices, they continue to inspire and empower young minds to make a meaningful impact in the world of agriculture.
