At MST Junior School, we are committed to fostering academic excellence alongside a profound sense of responsibility and stewardship among our learners. One of the impactful initiatives through which we instill these values is our annual banana planting tradition.
Each year, our enthusiastic Primary 6 learners eagerly participate in this tradition. Last year, the learners of Primary 6 diligently planted their banana plants, signaling the beginning of a journey that extends far beyond mere agricultural practices.
Throughout the year, our learners devote their Saturdays to nurturing their gardens, engaging in tasks ranging from sowing new seeds to weeding, all while eagerly anticipating the moment of harvest. Today, on the 24th of February 2024, we rejoice in the culmination of their hard work as three of our P7 learners proudly harvested their bananas.
Mubiru Sudais, Nabatanzi Elizabeth, and Mhapa Carlos stand as exemplars of the dedication and care that our learners invest in their plants. Their impressive yields – Mubiru’s banana weighing 35kg, Nabatanzi’s at 18kg, and Mhapa’s at 27kg – speak volumes about their commitment and perseverance.
Yet, beyond the tangible outcomes lie invaluable life lessons for our learners. From learning the virtue of patience required to nurture a plant from seed to fruit, to understanding the profound responsibility of caring for living organisms, our learners gain essential insights that will serve them well beyond the confines of the classroom.
Following the harvest, the bananas undergo careful weighing and are subsequently sold in the market. Notably, the proceeds from these sales are returned to our learners, reinforcing the principles of ownership and financial literacy as they deposit their earnings into their bank accounts.
At MST Junior School, we are dedicated to providing holistic education that equips our learners with the skills and values necessary for success in all facets of life. Through initiatives such as the banana planting tradition, we strive to nurture responsible, compassionate individuals poised to make a positive impact on the world.
